No one can resist a love letter Love letters are largely a lost and forgotten art. Not long ago suitors used the written word to work magic, and people were swept off their feet by a sweet, sincere note. How to Write a Love Letter teaches us, once again, how to reinvent this most meaningful of arts. In today's rushed, individualistic society, love letters are more potent than ever before. They embody and convey the mysterious, the unexpected, and the most utterly thoughtful. A love letter can be anything--from a brisk, casual E-mail asking a love interest to coffee to a handwritten marriage proposal that will serve as a family treasure always. Fun, flirtatious, intimate, provocative--a love letter can be any and all of these things. Even the simplest letter can cause a stir. Barrie Dolnick and Donald Baack have collected a wide range of letters--from old family keepsakes to casual and proper office E-mails. The authors demonstrate and explain, to both women and men, that writing a love letter is about turning sincere affection or intrigue into a unique, cherishable gesture, no matter how small the occasion or how short and uncomplicated the note. Whether you're shy and have trouble expressing your feelings face to face, or you're a romantic at heart who wants to learn more effective ways to communicate, How to Write a Love Letter is your ultimate inspiration and guide. Go ahead. Fan the flames of a fledgling romance, or tell your husband of forty years that you still adore him as much as you did the day you first married him. Words are sexy, romantic, and wondrous. Letters are legacies. Learn the art today, and improve your life. Julie, My life is starting to become different, even if my days seem the same. And I must confess that it's you who has changed my outlook. You have opened my eyes to some amazing new possibilities. Your touch is so gentle, your kisses are so delicious, and your body is soft when it presses against me. I will forever be filled with a new sense of wonder and joy, because you have shared these things with me. I must confess that in some ways I feel inadequate. Can I match your gentleness? Can I give any feeling as warm and secure as the one you have bestowed on me? You have chosen to show me such strong passion combined with such sweet affection, and I can only hope you feel a glimpse of the same from me. Our time together is very special. There are very few moments that a man knows will linger with him for the rest of his life, and you have already given me many. Thank you for being such an extraordinary part of my life. I hope we will continue this journey together for a long time to come. John

Love Letters and the Romantic Novel during the Napoleonic Wars

Love letters during the Napoleonic wars were largely framed by concepts of love which were promoted through novels and philosophy. The standard texts, so to speak, which were written by major authors who inherited this Enlightenment bearing, responded to the emerging concepts of love found in novels and philosophical essays. Love among this Napoleonic coterie is unique because it demonstrates the reciprocal relationship between the love letter and the romantic novel. Germaine de Staël, Juiette Récamier, Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant, Lady Emma Hamilton, Napoleon Bonaparte and his brother, Lucien Bonaparte, were the authors and recipients of some of the most passionate love letters of this period. They were also avid readers of the newly emerging genre of the romantic novel, and many of them were also authors of such works where they projected their personal romances onto the characterization of their fictional heroes and heroines. In addition, these authors had lived through the recent French Revolution and the Terror. Imprisoned during the Revolution, or branded as emigrés upon their return to Paris, their mature adult lives were spent in the shadows of the Napoleonic wars in which they shifted political loyalties as the specter of Napoleon’s powers grew from First Consul to Emperor of Europe. The looming threat of war ignited the depths of their passions and inspired their intellectual analysis of love, happiness and suicide. Their evolving concept of love was a romantic, all-consuming passion which gripped the lovers in fatal embraces. This book’s analysis of their love letters and romantic novels reveals the emerging political landscape of the period through extended metaphors of love and patriotism.

Religion “This book will help you surrender and trust the areas of your life that are meant to exude God-designed mystery, while also holding your hand as you search for substance and truth.” —Audrey Roloff, coauthor of A Love Letter Life, founder of Always More, and cofounder of Beating50Percent “Doubt is such a pertinent issue in this cultural moment. Dominic walks us through the issues of doubt with which we wrestle but he does so in pastoral practicality. One feels as though you are seated in his living room sipping coffee. Dominic is the type of soul who understands the questions of the heart. He never shames. He’s always transparent. He gives substantive hope.” —Emerson Eggerichs, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of Love & Respect">

Wrestling with doubt can be profoundly lonely, but Portland pastor Dominic Done offers a safe place to openly wrestle with your faith without being criticized or judged. Writing with humor and candor out of his own experiences, and incorporating Scripture, literature, and accounts of others who have doubted, Dominic Done argues that not only is questioning normal, it is often a path toward a rich and vibrant faith. Rather than viewing trust and doubt as incompatible, When Faith Fails provides readers with a way to wrestle and ask questions while growing ever closer to God. No subject is off-limits, and Dominic fearlessly and graciously addresses topics including: the experience of tragedy the difficult parts of the Bible the intersection of science and faith the times when God is silent By walking in the path that many others have trod, you can move through doubt into a deeper, fuller faith—a faith that doesn’t run from questions and the hard work of honest wrestling but instead embraces the mysteries of belief. "This book is for those of us who have experienced a gut check, or two, when it comes to some of the intersections between our lives and our faith. It’s for those of us who no longer want to add unnecessary explanations to our beliefs just because we can’t fully see what God is doing in our lives." —Bob Goff, New York Times bestselling author of Everybody, Always “This book is one of those books that I will be buying to give to multiple friends.” —Jefferson Bethke, New York Times bestselling author of Jesus > Religion “This book will help you surrender and trust the areas of your life that are meant to exude God-designed mystery, while also holding your hand as you search for substance and truth.” —Audrey Roloff, coauthor of A Love Letter Life, founder of Always More, and cofounder of Beating50Percent “Doubt is such a pertinent issue in this cultural moment.
