Population Effects of the Western Tailed Blue Butterfly on Whitney's Locoweed

The oviposition behavior of the western tailed blue butterfly, Everes amyntula (Lycaenidae), on the perennial, alpine legume, Astragalus whitneyi, was studied at Carson and Donner Passes in the Sierra Nevada and at Mt. Eddy in the Siskiyou Mountains from 1979-1981. The survivorship, pollination, and seed predation of this legume were also examined. The western tailed blue butterfly takes a long time to select a host-plant and decide to lay an egg. Also, its mean flight distance between oviposition sites is greater than the distance between the plants of A. whitneyi. The oviposition behavior of E. amnytula accounts for the distribution of eggs on A. whitneyi.--Adapted from abstract.
