On a late summer’s Monday, Doctor Claire Roget takes up her new post of clinical psychiatrist at a secure psychiatric unit in Stoke-on-Trent. Six months earlier, her predecessor, Heidi Faro was brutally murdered by one of the inmates in the office she has now inherited. As Claire is adjusting to her new job, she becomes increasingly suspicious that someone else might have been involved in the murder. But Claire finds herself trapped in a vulnerable position: if she speaks she could be accused of a breach of medical confidentiality. But if she keeps silent she could be guilty of failing to protect the public against a dangerous individual. A taut and gripping novel that seeks to explore the shifting boundary between sanity and insanity; this book is sure to play on your mind.

Not illustrated. 1843 edition. Excerpt: ... morbid images which had fastened themselves on his imagination--it was founded upon existing facts; and while under the dominion of violent passion (not insanity), he committed the murder. In many cases of persons unequivocally insane, it is impossible to trace the connexion between the particular hallucination of the mind, and certain acts which are considered criminal in the eye of the law. There may be a direct relation between the two, but which the lunatic, not being under any apprehension of the consequences, cunningly conceals from observation. In some of these cases of homicidal insanity, the unfortunate patient is driven to the commission of the crime, under the notion that conspiracies are formed against him, and that it is necessary to take away the life of some human being in order to preserve his own. This kind of illusion is a common feature in cases of insanity. For some period before the disordered condition of the imagination becomes very apparent, and often long before medical treatment or confinement are considered necessary, the patient may fancy that his nearest relatives and dearest friends are leagued against him. A person labouring under this form of monomania has been known, for a considerable length of time, to conceal it. Esquirol relates a case of a patient who attempted several times to commit suicide. He would ask for a pistol in order to shoot himself, saying, "I am tired of life." He displayed no illusions, and was of a cheerful turn of mind. It was not until after the lapse of two years that he confessed himself to labour under hallucination both of sight and hearing. He believed himself to be pursued by officials of the police; he saw and heard them, as he imagined, through the apertures of his...

The Divide: by Matt Taibbi | Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review Preview: The Divide by Matt Taibbi approaches the complicated topic of the unequal treatment of defendants in the United States criminal justice system based on wealth, through individual stories and rarely heard cases revealed in court proceedings. In the US, bankers and financial officials whose unethical and illegal behavior contributed to the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent economic scandals rarely faced prosecution for their activities. Instead, either the very smallest actors in those activities were prosecuted, or the companies negotiated fines and settlements outside of court. Many of these cases made use of the collateral consequences, a principle based on a memorandum written by Attorney General Eric Handler that states prosecutors should consider whether prosecution would cause too many lost jobs or too much financial harm to the company. Policing in major US cities generates a high volume of arrests, criminal charges for trivial offenses, and economic incentives not to fight allegations in court… PLEASE NOTE: This is Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review of the book and NOT the original book. The Age Factor in Second Language Acquisition

This book takes a hard look at some of the assumptions that are customarily made concerning the role of age in second language acquisition. The evidence and arguments the contributors present run counter to the notion that an early start in second language learning is of itself either absolutely sufficient or necessary for the attainment of native-like mastery of a second language. Another theme of the book is a doubt that there is a particular stage of maturity beyond which language learning is no longer fully possible. In short, the book presents a challenge to those who take it as given that second language learning is inevitably different in its essential nature from language acquisition in the childhood years and that second language knowledge acquired beyond the critical period is in all circumstances and in all respects doomed to fossilize at a non-native-like level.
