Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was to be the world’s only official wolf interpreter. But government funding did not come through for the position, so I had to give it up. I proposed that the position be privately funded, and it worked. #2 I was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in the 1950s. I spent my first ten years in the nearby small rural town of Billerica. I had an idyllic childhood there, spending hours outdoors. I became increasingly fascinated with wildlife. #3 I spent many summers in Alaska, and in 1975, the Alaska Legislature asked the federal government to officially change the name of the park to Denali. The name was not to change until 1980, but Denali was the name commonly used in Alaska at that time. #4 I was a migrant worker during those years, moving from job to job. I spent fifteen summers in Denali and three in Glacier National Park, watching and learning about wolves. I was asked to write a book about them, and in 1993 I published A Society of Wolves: National Parks and the Battle over the Wolf.

Gallup CEO Jim Clifton has pointed out that, “an increasing number of people in the world are miserable, hopeless, suffering, and becoming dangerously unhappy”. Something is profoundly wrong, and it must be addressed. Dr. Trevor Blattner’s thesis detailed in Redefining The Top 1% is simple. Leaders must break away from the current trend of despair and self-destruction by becoming a leader of themselves and those around them. And not just any sort of leader, but a very particular type of leader. They must become a Shepherd Leader. Reaching the Top 1% in one’s field, wealth, and influence is not an accident. It is as simple as learning the systematic process of how to behave, think, and perform like those in The Top 1%. It is achievable by anyone willing to follow the step-by-step behaviors and actions laid out in Redefining The Top 1%. The Top 1% System and Shepherd Leadership are not about being hard-core and arrogant, but rather about performing at absolute maximum capacity.

A lover, not a fighter. That was wolf 302. A renegade with an eye for the ladies, 302 was anything but Yellowstone's perfect alpha male. For starters, he fled from danger. He begged for food from other wolves, ditched females he'd gotten pregnant, and even napped during a heated battle with a rival pack! But this is not the story of 302's failures. This is the story of his dramatic transformation. And legendary wolf writer Rick McIntyre witnessed it all from the sidelines. As McIntyre closely observed with his spotting scope, wolf 302 began to mature, and, much to McIntyre's surprise, became the leader of a new pack in his old age. But in a year when game was scarce, could the ageing wolf provide for his family? Had he changed enough to live up to the legacies of the great alpha males before him?

An up-close look at the beautiful, yet fierce wolves of the greater Yellowstone area and their fight for survival. In Wolves: Western Warriors, the life of the powerful and majestic North American wolf, often considered to be vermin and dangerous, is presented, showing the struggle they have to simply survive in the wild and in a world where many people don’t appreciate wolves and often set out to exterminate them. Argyle explores their behavior, their family dynamics, and what it means to be a wolf in the wilderness of the greater Yellowstone area through her stunning photography. She includes information about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and the ongoing struggle with keeping wolves listed as endangered species, while also offering her personal observations about the Wapiti Lake pack, among others, and several notable individual wolves. The strikingly beautiful images and the information and stories woven throughout the pages of the book showcase this frequently misunderstood, yet completely incredible species. “If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other. If you do not talk to them you will not know then and what you do not know, you will not fear. What one fears, one destroys.” — Chief Dan George, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, British Columbia, Canada.

Book 8 in the Black Mesa Wolves series by USA Today bestselling author J.K. Harper Luke Rawlins trusts no one. Everyone he's ever known has betrayed him in the cruelest ways possible, leaving his mind cold and ruthless, and his shattered heart dark and empty. His home pack was filled with madness and deception, of the sort that could make a wolf doubt his own sanity. When he finally escaped, he chose instead life as a rogue: always hunted, always watching his back. Then the Black Mesa Wolf Pack took him in, and within their ranks he found a semblance of normal life. The opportunity to be alpha of his own pack is an unexpected gift, one he won't lose. He has a chance for a real life again. Until the sexy she-wolf who shattered his heart and broke his soul suddenly reappears in his life. Tala Mingan never wanted to be broken, scarred, or merciless, but her upbringing made sure of that. She's the product of a damaged pack, and she'll never be able to heal completely. The one time she dared to love, all she ended up doing was hurting the mate of her heart so badly she knows he will never forgive her. When he abruptly fled their pack months ago for a better life, she couldn't blame him for leaving her too. Even so, her heart has bled every day for Luke and the fearless joy they tried to build together. Trapped by the pack that will never let her go, she's resigned to living a short, brutal life instead. Then she's offered a terrible choice. The kind where she's damned if she does, and damned if she doesn't. The sort of choice that leaves Tala truly desperate and willing to do whatever it takes to save the only man she's ever wanted—even if the cost is her life. From two of the world’s leading authorities on dogs, an imaginative journey into a future of dogs without people What would happen to dogs if humans simply disappeared? Would dogs be able to survive on their own without us? A Dog’s World imagines a posthuman future for dogs, revealing how dogs would survive—and possibly even thrive—and explaining how this new and revolutionary perspective can guide how we interact with dogs now. Drawing on biology, ecology, and the latest findings on the lives and behavior of dogs and their wild relatives, Jessica Pierce and Marc Bekoff—two of today’s most innovative thinkers about dogs—explore who dogs might become without direct human intervention into breeding, arranged playdates at the dog park, regular feedings, and veterinary care. Pierce and Bekoff show how dogs are quick learners who are highly adaptable and opportunistic, and they offer compelling evidence that dogs already do survive on their own—and could do so in a world without us. Challenging the notion that dogs would be helpless without their human counterparts, A Dog’s World enables us to understand these independent and remarkably intelligent animals on their own terms.

"An outstanding study of the rise of the European nation-state from feudal, monarchical roots following the Roman Empire's collapse to the end of the Napoleonic Era at Waterloo in 1815. The work is a tour de force addressing the fundamental dynamics inherent in the evolution of modern Western civilization and nation-states."--Stanley D.M. Carpenter, U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island The 1648 Treaty of Westphalia marked the emergence of the nation-state as the dominant political entity in Europe. This book traces the development of the nation-state from its infancy as a virtual dynastic possession, through its incarnation as the embodiment of sovereign popular will. Three sections chronicle the critical epochs of this transformation, beginning with the belief in the "divine right" of monarchical rule and ending with the concept that the people, not their leaders, are the heart of a nation--an enduring political ideal that remains the basis of the modern the nation-state.

"A redemption story, an adventure story, and perhaps above all, a love story."--Nate Blakeslee, New York Times-bestselling author of American Wolf The Druid Peak Pack was the most famous wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park, and maybe even in the world. This is the dramatic true story of its remarkable leader, Wolf 21--whose compassion and loyalty challenges commonly held beliefs about alpha males. In this compelling follow-up to the national bestseller The Rise of Wolf 8, Rick McIntyre profiles one of Yellowstone's most revered alpha males, Wolf 21. Leader of the Druid Peak Pack, Wolf 21 was known for his unwavering bravery, his unusual benevolence (unlike other alphas, he never killed defeated rival males), and his fierce commitment to his mate, the formidable Wolf 42. Wolf 21 and Wolf 42 were attracted to each other the moment they met--but Wolf 42's jealous sister interfered viciously in their relationship. After an explosive insurrection within the pack, the two wolves came together at last as leaders of the Druid Peak Pack, which dominated the park for more than 10 years. McIntyre recounts the pack's fascinating saga with compassion and a keen eye for detail, drawing on his many years of experience observing Yellowstone wolves in the wild. His outstanding work of science writing offers unparalleled insight into wolf behavior and Yellowstone's famed wolf reintroduction project. It also offers a love story for the ages. "Like Thomas McNamee, David Mech, Barry Lopez, and other literary naturalists with an interest in wolf behavior, McIntyre writes with both elegance and flair, making complex biology and ethology a pleasure to read. Fans of wild wolves will eat this one up."--Kirkus starred review
